Loved Atlanta! I was able to catch up with another inspiring graphic designer and yogi, Kristen Leigh, who also has a serious case of wanderlust. First stop was General Assembly for a presentation - The Future of: COMMUNITY. Blake Howard, a force behind Creative Mornings and Creative Director at Matchstic, discussed how to create meaningful communities. A great example of community building was Bearings Bike Shop where kids earn a bike of their own through community service or logging shop hours. Shop leaders and neighbors within the community mentor kids as opportunities arise in the shop. The Atlanta location is doing some good stuff too... a recent challenge was to create 48 new website designs pro bono for 48 non profits. You can see the before and afters on the right.
Great time networking with other graphic designers at WeWork Miami. WeWork is a platform for creators providing a coworking space and community. They have offices around the world including San Francisco, Amsterdam, London and Tel Aviv. The Work of Art kick off event took a deeper look into the past, present and future of Miami's art scene. Previously considered a cultural wasteland, the Miami art scene is growing rapidly with Art Basel, New York connections and being a major international hub. Panel guests included Benjamin Hollingsworth, a professional soccer player turned fine artist and Alexander Mijares, a Miami-based visual artist with Cuban and Spanish roots who finds inspiration in the colorful energy of both Miami and heritage.
The Wynwood Arts District, established in 2009, is home to over 70 Art Galleries, Boutiques, Antique Shops, Eclectic Bars, and one of the largest open-air street-art. This is one of the largest and most prominent creative communities in the United States. Taking over what used to be the warehouse and manufacturing district of Greater Miami, developers have rehabilitated neglected warehouses, shuttered factories, and other unused buildings, transforming them into the numerous art complexes, galleries, performing art spaces, restaurants, cafes, and other creative businesses that are seen here today.
What a treat to see Elizabeth Gilbert live in Miami at the beautiful Adrienne Arsht Performing Center. In her latest book Big Magic Elizabeth Gilbert offers insights into the mysterious nature of inspiration. She asks us to embrace our curiosity and let go of needless suffering. She shows us how to tackle what we most love, and how to face down what we most fear. She discusses the attitudes, approaches, and habits we need in order to live our most creative lives. Some highlights for me... Live an enchanted life (be brave!) vs. mundane, take the road less traveled and take a leap of faith. Trust your curiosity... god spreads bread crumbs :) Always walk into a room and introduce yourself to at least one person.
The Miami Beach Architectural District (also known as Miami Art Deco District) is a U.S. historic district (designated as such on May 14, 1979) located in the South Beach neighborhood of Miami Beach, Florida. The area was well known as the district, that Italian fashion designer Gianni Versace resided in a mansion in Ocean Drive. I took the two hour walking tour which was great! Highly recommend it.
Love this artist! Romero Britto is a Brazilian Neo-pop artist, painter and sculptor. He combines elements of cubism, pop art and graffiti painting in his work, using vibrant colors and bold patterns as a visual expression of hope and happiness.
Talent is only part of the equation. The rest is network. Without a network, creative work does not endure. Creativity is not a solitary invention but a collaborative creation. And communities create opportunities for creative work to succeed. According to Csikszentmihalyi, it’s better to move somewhere new than it is to will yourself to be more creative. And now, it’s easier than ever to transplant yourself someplace inspiring, even if temporarily. The truth is there are connections everywhere and always more resources available to those willing to look. 1. Find a gatekeeper. 2. Connect with other people in the network. 3. Help as many people as possible.
